Text Box: On Friday March 31st we unofficially opened Glass Hill (usual start date April 1st) because the snow had melted and the temperature was over 70 degrees! What a difference a few days make ... it’s snowing today, but that’s the beauty in living here – we have something climate wise for everyone.
Now that we’ve started a new season it’s my pleasure to report on what’s going on with your club, and what’s transpired since we communicated last fall. Operationally speaking, the course and especially the greens, continued showing improvement last year. You’ll be happy to hear that initial inspections show little green damage from this past winter. Hopefully this trend will continue as the warmer weather develops and the summer progresses.
Financially we experienced a small loss during 2005 due primarily to significant unanticipated increases in fuel and insurance costs. These increased costs are expected to continue going forward and accordingly you’ve all seen a small increase in your 2006 dues. It is my position to Text Box: hold the line on costs near term going forward, but some equipment needs and course management/improvement have been and will continue to be necessary.
Our biggest immediate endeavor continues to be development of a satisfactory irrigation system for our course. We continue to explore an easement with our landlord for long - term water usage rights, and remain hopeful that an agreement can be worked out shortly. We continue to have dialogue with the local Trenton Falls Association regarding our irrigation/water plans and hope to be included in one of their upcoming monthly meetings to mutually explore this undertaking in greater detail. As good neighbors we expect to work well with other community members, and as President of Glass Hill it’s my goal that we (Board Members) represent the club appropriately in all ongoing local efforts.
Some may wonder about the necessity of having a fully irrigated course – good question! Although not a required need, the ability to receive affordable water on an as needed basis would allow Text Box: for continued improvement to the course. Approximately 12% of our budget is spent on over-seeding and fertilizing our course. With proper water management (irrigation) we can ensure this expenditure will not be wasted because of potential summer drought conditions. As an added bonus, proper watering will also enhance soil management with stronger grass conditions allowing for less course additive run-off.
At our Annual meeting scheduled for Thursday, May 18th, at 7:00PM at the Trenton Town Hall, you will hear more about our ongoing water/irrigation efforts and a drawing will be available for everyone’s review.
Soon the leagues will be teeing off, and all members will be back with their friends and guests at Glass Hill. When you come to the course please remember to sign in legibly, play according to the club rules, follow correct golf etiquette and welcome all newcomers to our club.
Most importantly have fun and relish your time at Glass Hill ... after all, this is part of what enjoying life’s all about!
